Synology DS224+: distinguish installed memory from the documented expansion maximum

A Synology DiskStation DS224+ offer described with a memory number can refer to the original system, a seller-expanded system or the documented maximum. Those descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable. Before paying for a configuration, ask which quantity is installed in the actual unit and which quantity appears only in the specification’s expansion allowance.

Read the memory fields together

Synology’s Canada product record lists 2GB DDR4 non-ECC system memory, one memory slot and a maximum of 6GB expressed as 2GB plus 4GB. It also qualifies support when non-Synology expansion memory is used and notes that pre-installed component specifications may change. These are documentation statements checked on 14 October 2026, not inspected hardware. DS224+ hardware specifications and memory notes.

The arithmetic explains a configuration description; it is not a performance recommendation. Reading maximum capacity as delivered capacity would turn an expansion possibility into an imaginary included component. Equally, a seller may have made a genuine change that needs to be documented independently of the original specification.

Translate the offer into a configuration record

Use three fields: factory description, seller’s declared installed configuration, and evidence identifying any added component. Put the seller’s exact wording beside the manufacturer record. If the title mentions a total but the detailed basket does not identify the addition, keep that unresolved rather than calculating an assumed component and treating it as supplied.

Separate memory from storage in this record. A memory figure does not tell you how much file space the selected drives provide. Conversely, a storage-capacity headline does not describe installed memory. Requiring the offer to distinguish the two prevents a comparison in which one seller’s drive bundle is mistaken for another seller’s memory expansion.

Ask a workload question instead of promising speed

Describe what you intend the system to do in ordinary terms and identify the software involved. Then consult that software’s current requirements and supported configurations. A maximum memory figure alone does not establish how many users your particular work can serve, how responsive it will feel or whether a proposed software combination is suitable.

If you do not yet know the application or deployment, avoid justifying an expansion with a claim such as business-ready. Request a configuration explanation tied to the intended task. This guide provides no internal installation steps, component substitution instructions, formatting procedure or guarantee about data protection.

Keep compatibility evidence with the exact unit

When an addition matters, record its part identity and check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for DS224+ specifically. A recommendation for a visually similar DiskStation is not sufficient evidence. Do not convert a store’s broad works-with-Synology label into manufacturer endorsement or assumed support terms.

Actual installed total, component identity, workload suitability and regional offer conditions: Needs editor verification. No memory benchmark or inspection was performed, and this article does not judge warranty disputes. A purchase comparison should distinguish documented capacity from the unit being sold before assigning value to either. Keep memory, drive storage and inclusions as three records

Synology’s current DS224+ record distinguishes the stated system memory and expansion maximum, while noting that storage drives are sold separately. A seller’s capacity headline can therefore conceal more than one configuration choice. Ask for the installed memory total, identified storage drives and any added memory module as separate entries.

Do not calculate a delivered drive configuration from the number of bays, or count the optional module twice when reading a maximum total. Compare the declared offer with the exact supporting part records. If a seller supplies only a single unlabeled capacity value, request clarification before assigning value to the bundle. This check does not assess workload performance, RAID, installation or data-protection suitability.
